President Mahama seeks AU action over xenophobic attacks against Ghanaians, Nigerians in South Africa

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern over recent xenophobic attacks against Africans, including Ghanaians and Nigerians, in South Africa, calling for stronger action to protect the ideals of African unity and solidarity.

Addressing the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Freetown, Sierra Leone, President Mahama said the attacks, which have resulted in the loss of lives and created fear and uncertainty among affected communities, require urgent attention.


He welcomed the decision by ECOWAS leaders to support Ghana’s request for the matter to be tabled at the next African Union Summit for continental consideration.

President Mahama said Africa’s liberation was achieved through solidarity across borders and cautioned against allowing intolerance and the actions of a minority to weaken the bonds that unite the continent.

He emphasised that African countries must continue to promote peace, cooperation and mutual respect as the foundation for a united and prosperous continent.

Ghana formally communicated its intention to establish a diplomatic mission in Singapore during a High-Level Consultative Visit led by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honouable James Gyakye Quayson (MP) from 10th to 15th April, 2026. The visit formed part of a broader strategy to expand Ghana’s diplomatic footprint in Asia to strengthen engagement with key global economic hubs.
