PRESIDENT MAHAMA HOLDS BILATERAL TALKS WITH HIS SOUTH KOREAN COUNTERPART

 


The President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has held bilateral talks with the President of the Republic of Korea, Lee Jae-Myung aimed at strengthening the relations between the two countries.


Discussions between the two leaders focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in areas such as agribusiness, maritime security, artificial intelligence, value addition to critical minerals, automotive manufacturing, infrastructure development particularly railway systems as well as trade and capacity building.


President Mahama recalled the historical ties between the two countries and noted that both nations share common values rooted in democracy, respect for human rights, and commitment to international cooperation. He added that these shared principles have facilitated the cooperation of the two countries at the multilateral level including the United Nations.



At the bilateral level, His Excellency the President highlighted opportunities for expanding cooperation in agriculture and agribusiness, particularly through ongoing initiatives supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency to boost rice production and enhance food security in Ghana.




On his part, President Lee Jae-Myung stated that the visit of his Ghanaian counterpart has provided an opportunity to deepen cooperation that will directly benefit the citizens of both countries. He described Ghana as a valued economic partner and informed of the importation of cocoa beans from Ghana for its famous “Ghana Chocolate”.




At the end of the bilateral talks at Cheong Wa Dae, the two countries signed the following:

i. Framework Agreement on Climate Change between the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Ghana;

ii. Memorandum of Understanding on Maritime Safety and Security between the Korea Coast Guard and the Ghana Navy; and 

iii. Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea and the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Ghana on Technology, Digitalisation and Innovation Programme.  




Present at the meeting were senior government officials from both sides including the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ambassador of Ghana to Korea, His Excellency Kojo Choi.
