Tema Port Expansion Marks Turning Point for Ghana’s Maritime Future.

President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday 13th November 2025 commissioned the first two phases of the $1.5 billion Tema Port Expansion Project, a major infrastructure milestone aimed at strengthening Ghana’s position as a regional trade powerhouse.

The high-profile ceremony drew a strong presence of national and local leaders, including the Hon. Mayor of Tema, the Board Chairman of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), and the Members of Parliament for Tema West and Tema East. Their attendance underscored the strategic importance of the expansion to both the Tema metropolis and Ghana’s wider economic ambitions.

The project which was executed through a partnership between Meridian Port Services (MPS), GPHA, APM Terminals and Africa Global Logistics (AGL)—stands as one of the largest and most advanced port upgrades in sub-Saharan Africa. Designed to boost capacity, efficiency and speed of operations, the expansion is expected to significantly ease congestion, reduce turnaround time and cut the cost of doing business.

Speaking at the event, President Mahama described the development as “a turning point for Ghana’s maritime future,” noting that the enhanced facilities will attract increased investment and elevate Ghana’s status in international trade. He said the upgraded port will strengthen supply chain systems, support exportes and imports, and open new avenues for job creation.

The Hon. Mayor of Tema, who joined the President and dignitaries in touring the new installations, highlighted the project’s potential to stimulate economic activity across the metropolis and deepen Tema’s role as Ghana’s industrial anchor.

With the commissioning of the first two phases, Ghana moves a step closer to completing a state-of-the-art port complex poised to reshape the nation’s logistics landscape and enhance its competitiveness across global markets.
