A Society That Glorifies Wealth Over Wisdom – Enock Agyepong Writes
In a society where wealth is worshipped over education, you’ll only end up with more criminals than scholars. We now live in a system where the rich cannot be corrected—no matter how misguided their actions—because a hungry population has elevated money to the level of deity.
In such a climate, even the most sensible advice falls on deaf ears if the listener is wealthy. Solomon prayed for wisdom not riches and yet received both. But in today’s Ghana, many would ask for money first and forget wisdom entirely.
Even in many churches today, individuals are elevated to positions of leadership not because of godliness, but based on the size of their offering. “It doesn’t matter what they do for a living as long as the money flows, so do the titles.
Our society quickly rallies around anyone with money no questions asked.
You’ll be there, and suddenly NAM1 surfaces, and people rush toward him hoping to grab some coins only to be left disappointed.
Then comes a Cheddar, with bodyguards roughing up fans for getting too close but still, the people will cheer on.
Next, a Kofi Boat pops up and suddenly he’s being called ‘Chairman’ and ‘King.’
An RNQA throws a lavish party and everyone shows up in full force with nobody asking what he really does.
And if Shatta Wale’s car appears, the streets erupt as people run after him, waiting for money to be thrown.
Some forms of wealth can be justified by clear hard work and innovation, others remain mysterious and questionable. Yet the masses continue to follow blindly. Worse still, if anyone dares to question or advise a rich man, the crowd will attack not because you’re wrong, but because they are hungry and loyal to the money, not the message.
Fact is not every rich man is wise, some inherited their fortunes and squandered it because they were never allowed to be advised.
They were not the brains behind the wealth, and they never learned how to manage it.
In the past Cultural icons like Osofo Dadzie warned us of the dangers of shortcuts. Unfortunately, today’s digital world glamorizes fast money and flashy lifestyles but the consequences remain the same.
Looking beyond Ghana billionaires like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg use their wealth not to flaunt it, but to fund charitable foundations and help the underprivileged.
Meanwhile, our own millionaires are obsessed with opulence and praise,” he noted.
I strongly believer lifestyle audits in Ghana by state institutions must step up and ensure accountability.
Until we start respecting academia, we’ll continue celebrating criminals more than doctors, professors, and lawyers.
Sadly, even some of these respected professionals, once given political opportunities, join the cycle of greed and corruption mirroring exactly what the society glorifies.
The love for money leads to greed and greed leads straight into the cage of criminals.
We must as a society make a conscious decision to live within our means and appreciate the value of hard work.
Money is sufficient when used wisely but the more you chase it blindly, the more it becomes a mirage until one day, you crash out.
