MTN’s clear disinterest in addressing the loopholes within its mobile money system - Yaw Ntim Afriyie speaks Out
Yaw Ntim Afrifa, a Brand Strategist and lead of Euphrate Agency and Oxcode.io on his Facebook page speak on MTN MobileMoney Limited (MoMo), the operating service, which has refuted allegations of a system breach of a viral social media complaint from a customer who claimed GH¢11,000 was withdrawn from her mobile wallet without her consent.
Sometime back, when the Government of Ghana was pressing MTN Ghana in an attempt to minimize its enormous market share, I didn’t understand. My position was: why would you make a business suffer for its product and marketing brilliance?
I guess now I do understand.
MTN’s clear disinterest in addressing the loopholes within its mobile money system stems from one primary fact — it doesn’t hurt their numbers.
MTN controls some crazy market elasticity, where even in the face of a full-blown scandal, the company still retains a massive chunk of the market. This may be due to a plethora of factors, including a certain consumer behavior trend among Ghanaians, where change is difficult.
We, the customers of MTN, are the victims of the market power we have given them, unfortunately.
