"Choose people who will mention and recommend your name in rooms where you’ve not even stepped foot in before." - Dr. Daniel McKorley

I come across this "advice" on social media often, and it’s a sentiment I agree with.

What this "statement" implies is the importance of choosing to invest in your "personal board of advisors": people who genuinely care about your success, who believe in you, who envision you achieving great things, and who are eager to connect the dots on your behalf. These are people you should have already nurtured relationships with, demonstrated your worth to, and positioned yourself effectively to receive their mention.

However, the unwritten part of this is that you also must be doing that for others, saying their names loudly in rooms where there is opportunity. It means connecting, introducing, making paths, and clearing barriers for others to succeed too.

And to go a step further; if you are in a position to be in that room where opportunities are spoken of, where you get the privilege to say someone's name -- think about whose name you will speak about. Think about how you will use your position to elevate them because they may never get the chance if you do not use your voice to ensure that their names get mentioned.

So, yes, surround yourself with people who will say your name in a room full of opportunities, but remember to also be the type of colleague/friend who mentions others in a room full of opportunities.

Whatever you do for the rest of the year, I hope you seek to help people even when they’re not around. I hope you give from the deepest parts of your heart — because that giving is an extension of your admiration and your support.

I hope you have the type of friends who mention your name in a room full of opportunity. I hope you are that type of friend, too.
