UNPAID HEALTH WORKERS TO RECEIVE SALARIES AS GOVERNMENT DELIVERS ON ITS COMMITMENT

The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced significant progress in addressing the backlog of unpaid salaries and recruitment challenges it inherited upon assuming office. Speaking at a press conference, Hon. Mintah Akandoh said the Ministry has worked diligently with the Ministry of Finance to resolve long-standing issues affecting thousands of health workers across the country. He disclosed that 883 medical house officers who began work in 2024 without pay have now been placed on a salary, while clearance has been secured for 203 doctors employed late last year.   Approval has also been given for the recruitment of 800 doctors who completed their housemanship in 2024 but were still awaiting placement, he added. The Minister added that 321 pharmacists who completed their housemanship in early 2024 have now received their allowances. Emphasising the importance of the meeting, the President underscored that it reaffirms the shared commitments made during the  Beijing Conference 30 years ago for the empowerment of women and girls. He stated that Ghana on its part has resolved to remain committed and has taken decisive measures to mainstream gender. He cited the election of Ghana’s first female Vice President and appointment of other women for strategic positions and expressed optimism that with continued support, women could break the glass ceiling and advance to lead the country.   The Ministry of Health this morning warmly received the Operation Walk Syracuse team from New York, USA, marking the start of another impactful humanitarian mission to deliver free joint replacement surgeries to Ghanaians in need. The delegation, comprising orthopedic surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, physiotherapists, and volunteers, will work with local health professionals at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Koforidua, to provide life-changing hip and knee replacement surgeries—restoring mobility and hope to patients who otherwise have limited access to specialist care.
